The Nigerian Institution of Engineers , Yenagoa chapter has instituted a public lecture series and its maiden edition coincided with the 76th birth day celebration of Engr. Prof. Emeritus Steven Odi – Owei with a lecture topic : Municipal Waste Management and Landfill Gas Production delivered by Engr. Prof . Emmanuel Adigio, Vice Chancellor, Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta state.
In his welcome address, the chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Engineers, Yenagoa Chapter, Engr. Jokori Eluanatein Mac stated that the chapter,s annual has not only instituted a public lecture series and coincidentally named after Engr. Prof. Emeritus Steven Odi – Owei whose birthday fell on 21 st June, saying it was used by professional institution ( NIMechE) in recognition of his exemplary professional conduct,excellence and selfless services,that has impacted positively on the lives of so many engineers and humanity in general.

According to him, he is a worthy ambassador, producer of distinguished Engineers, a great patriot, professional Trainer and mentor who has demonstrated massive commitment to promoting professionalism in Engineering and particularly mechanical Engineering.
Earlier, in his address, Engr. Prof. Emeritus Steven Odi – Owei commended and appreciated the chapter for considering him worthy of naming the chapter,s annual Lecture Series after him which equally coincided with his 76th birthday .

He said as an annual Public Lecture series organised by a professional body such as the NIMechE usually has enormous prospects to offer a platform to enlighten , engage, and generally educate the mechanical Engineering public to participate on matters relating to the advancement of professionalism as well as address policy and current developmental issues”.

He posited that , it was his humble expectation that this lecture series would provide the requisite collection of ideas and views capable of adding value to the current status and evolving practices in the Engineering profession ”
He said Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines involving engines and machines , maintenance of mechanical systems, designs and operation, energy services, thermal sensors and devices including tools manufacturing and production , oil and gas operations, material sciences for designs , heat and electrical power generation , automotive ( rail and automobile) application , research and development etc. He further expressed the believe that the practitioners , consultants , academics and friends of the Engineering profession would reap huge benefits these annual public lecture as the lecture materials in terms of safety and easy reference.

He said he could not end the address without acknowledging the Almighty God who preserved his life to the 76th year as he gave his life to Christ 33 years ago. That was when he was liberated from the bondage and guilt of transgression and set him from his eternal wrath and anger.” So my spiritual 33rd birthday in the Lord is infinitely more precious than the physical 76th, as l now live one at a time, devoid of unnecessary mundane transient , wicked and perverse world”
The guest Lecturer , Engr. prof. Emmanuel Adigio, Vice Chancellor, Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta state who spoke on the topic : Municipal Waste Management and Landfill Gas production ,said a well – managed municipal waste Landfill gas production , has the the gains of of reduced greenhouse gas emissions reduced acid gas on water ( leaching ) and reduced land contamination which is key step towards sustainable development “.

He also disclosed once a research on water hyacinth is completed, it will be turned to valuable purposes and it will enhance economic growth of the Niger Delta region where the water hyacinth is preponderance.

In their various goodwill messages , Engr. prof Dau S. Zibokere, Prof Gesiye Salo Anganye, Barr. Douye Odi – Owei, Engr Olice Kemenanabo who promised to support the annual lecture with sum of five hundred thousand throughout his life time , extolled the celebrant and applauded the organizers in honouring Engr Prof Emeritus Steven Odi – Owei in their maiden edition of the annual lecture.

The Harold Dappa Biriye Conference Centre, venue of the lecture was filled with personalities drawn from the Engineering profession and academics .
