A rights activist and protagonist of the Ijaw nation, Hon. Ikosomi Ibarakumo Barry says his strong desire to serve the Ijaw nation propelled him to throw his hat to the ring to contest for the position of Publicity Secretary of the Ijaw National Congress (INC) Central Zone.

Ibarakumo, who is a former Councilor, INC Clan chairman in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa state, and Zonal Financial Secretary, told Niger Delta Herald in an interview that if given the opportunity, he would ensure that all Ijaws register as lNC members through awareness campaign on the importance of the pan Ijaw organization.

He said “it’s an in born thing in me to serve humanity especially on how we can bring justice to our people.”

If elected, he said, he would work with the leadership of INC in the zone to fully actualize the four major objectives of the apex Ijaw sociocultural group.

He highlighted the core objectives of the INC among others to include protection and promotion of sociocultural heritage of the ljaws, protection of rights of the ljaw people, formulation and articulation of all issues as well as uniting all ljaws together.

He said he would bring his wealth of INC leadership experience to bear in publicizing the ideals of the founding fathers of the organization, saying “l am very, very experienced in the Ijaw business.”

Ibarakumo further said “l want to be part of the leadership of lNC to give the ljaw nation the voice that it deserves as the fourth largest ethnic nationality in Nigeria.

The aspirant hinted that one of the reasons he wants to be Zonal Publicity Secretary of the INC is because he has come to understand that the organization is not popular among the Ijaw people, hence many are yet to register as members, promising to fill the gap through sensitization campaigns to schools, towns and villages.

“The weapon of the ljaw struggle is no longer carrying of arms but by intellectualism and persuasion. If elected, l will join other of my colleagues to bring the INC to the door step of our people,” he promised.
