Bayelsa United have won the 2021 FA Cup sponsored by AITEO after a pulsating final against Nasarawa United at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
This is the first time in a long time that a team in the lower league will win the coveted FA trophy.
The Yenagoa- based team won 4-3 in the ensuing penalty shoot-out after the regulation time ended 2-2 draw.
Also, Bayelsa Queens lifted the women’s edition of the FA cup to make it double for the state after a 4-2 triumph over FC Robo of Lagos.
Bayelsa United were dubbed the “giant killers” after eliminating very formidable Nigerian Professional League sides, Rangers FC, Lobi Stars and Rivers United on their road to the final.
This is perhaps the first time in FA cup history when two teams from a state will win both titles.
The management of both teams led by Ebiki Timitimi of Bayelsa United and Robin Apreala of Bayelsa Queens have done very well to attain these feats.
With this victory, Bayelsa United have picked one of the continental tickets for the CAF Confederation Cup.
Governor Douye Diri was represented at the final by the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who led a powerful delegation from the state to Benin City.
